This is what matters: a second chance |
|
"Staying out at night used to be so exciting. It was a lot better than staying home where my mother was always yelling and so much better than doing useless and boring homework. I had a group of friends who understood these frustrations. One night, we were just hanging out, not doing anything in particular, not causing anyone any bother when two policemen approached us.
They took me into custody and held me on suspicion of triad activity. Talk about fear and shock! I had no idea that the guys I was associating with were gang members. I was afraid. I was about to lose everything: my family, my freedom and my future. When a social worker got in touch with me and offered me the opportunity to turn my life around, I jumped at the chance. Hopefully, I am now on the right track and will not be so stupid and gullible again."
Ah Kwan is now a regular at the night markets organized by HKFYG's Youth Crime Prevention Centre. Read on for news about them. Visit ycpc.hkfyg.org.hk or contact Ken Lee tel 2702 2202 for further details. |

Togetherness: Young People's Views on Social Cohesion and Social Fracture in Hong Kong
95.2% of the 519 15-34 year-olds in a phone poll thought togetherness was important. Its greatest meaning is its potential to improve livelihoods (27.6%), to keep the city moving on (27.4%) or to increase sense of belonging (20.8%). Yet, respondents feel that society is seriously at risk of fracture and 33% think the problem lies in mutual lack of trust between the public and the government.
