Joining hands together

We are still feeling the repercussions of Typhoon Vicente, the worst storm to hit Hong Kong in decades, which struck at the end of July. During the storm, a cargo ship lost seven 40 foot containers overboard, resulting in around 150 tonnes of plastic being spilt into the sea.

The plastic pellets, known as 'nurdles' are an environmental hazard, not only because they can absorb pollutants from the sea and become toxic themselves, but also because of the danger they pose to marine life.

While the government has been active in the cleanup process, what has been most impressive is the number of volunteers who have been turning up on beaches all over Hong Kong to help. We have seen hundreds of people, all ages and from all walks of life, putting their efforts together to rid the waters of these pellets.

This is something that the Federation heartily commends. We support and encourage everyone, young people along with their families and friends, to join in this collective effort to protect the waters. We are proud that all this hard work not only puts the best interests of the community first, but clearly shows both civic responsibility and the power of people volunteering together.
